Phyllis Ryder is an associate professor of writing at The George Washington University, is the director of the George Washington University Writing Center, and serves on the board of directors for the Coalition for Community Writing.
Much of Ryder’s work has emphasized community writing and service-learning. Christina LaVecchia reviewed Ryder’s book titled Rhetorics for Community Action, noting in particular that “Ryder spends most of the book unpacking theories and discourses of publics through case studies
of community groups in the DC metro area; throughout, she makes it clear that developing our own understanding is beneficial for teaching students” (p. 145). Many of the book’s chapters end with a section on pedagogical implications, suggesting that this book can be especially useful to community engaged scholars who teach writing courses with service or engagement components.
