Patrick Berry is an Associate Professor of Writing and Rhetoric at Syracuse University. He is currently an editor of Mend, a journal that “celebrates the lives and creative work of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people as well as individuals who have been impacted by the criminal justice system,” and he also administers the journal Intertext, which highlights undergraduate writing at Syracuse University.
Berry’s research has spanned subjects from incarceration and advocacy, transnational literacies, to digital rhetorics. His book Doing Time, Writing Lives: Refiguring Literacy and Higher Education in Prison explores the transformative power of literacy and higher education programs for incarcerated individuals. It looks at challenges and barriers, personal narratives, and policy implications. This is a great resource for those interested in advocacy for incarcerated individuals!
